Our Story
Purl Nordic was born out of a passion for knitting and for high-quality, responsibly produced knitting supplies.
I’m Kaisa, the founder and entrepreneur behind Purl Nordic. My roots are in Rovaniemi, in the landscapes of Northern Finland, where I spent the first twenty years of my life before moving to Helsinki to study. I earned my Master’s degree in Economics from Aalto University in 2011 and then worked for several years in the consulting world. While the work was rewarding in many ways, I always had a sense that I wanted to do something more tangible—something that would engage both my hands and my mind.
When I spent over seven years as a stay-at-home mom caring for our three children, I truly got to experience life hands-on. It was the fulfillment of a dream and the happiest period of my life so far. The longer I stayed home with our children, the more distant returning to consulting work felt. I greatly enjoyed being constantly engaged with the kids, living in the moment, and using my hands instead of sitting in front of a laptop from morning till night.
During my years at home, hands-on creativity became even more meaningful: I knitted more and more, and knitting became a way for me to calm down and catch a breath amidst everything. Knitting goes with you, waits patiently, and adapts to the rhythm of your life—minute by minute or hour by hour. At the same time, I began to develop a deeper interest in different types of yarn: their materials, quality, feel, and origin.
Gradually, the idea of my own store began to take shape—a place where every yarn would be carefully selected, high-quality, and responsibly produced, and where the selection would also include smaller, lesser-known producers from Europe and around the world. I want to know the backgrounds and makers of our products as thoroughly as possible and offer customers a selection they can buy with confidence, knowing it is made to last.
